Each new term brings the powerful promise of lifting one person’s crippling burdens and providing hope for an impacting future on many others.

Dorothy, a devoted TGF volunteer, traveled up-country to find Gretta Scholar candidates in the town of Gulu, the epicenter of 22 years of war in northern Uganda. Although the last few short years have been relatively peaceful, these chosen hopefuls have known nothing but a lifetime of terror, killings, rape, child abductions, and starvation at the hands of rebel forces known as the Lord’s Resistance Army or LRA. Here are two such extraordinary stories.

Another one of our scholars, age 27, is the first born in a family of 4 children. In 1990 during the course of the war, her father died when she was only 7. At the age of 13, while walking on her way to school, she was abducted by the LRA and held captive for 8 years. During her captivity, she birthed two children now age 11 and 5. In 2004, while pregnant with her second child, she, along with her first born, escaped the LRA. She was inspired by the nurses at Gulu Hospital who took tender care of her when she returned from captivity. It had been her dream to be a nurse long before her abduction, and in 2005, she went back to school, has successfully graduated with high marks and is ready for university.

Jennifer, age 19, is one of six siblings. She and her brothers and sisters were orphaned when both parents died of HIV/AIDS. Jennifer was 16 years old when she lost her parents and has been under the care of St. Jude Orphanage. The orphanage had supplied schooling but she had no support after passing exit exams as the orphanage did not provide for tertiary education. She now lives with her 5 siblings with their grandparents in a village called Buuobot Ochi up-country Uganda.

Their stories are beyond our comprehension. But here they endure as a testament to the human spirit. These Gretta Scholars are ready to turn the page and begin the journey to become nurses and later go back and serve in the communities.

We have a special gift to you! Our new video featuring Gretta Scholars telling their powerful and heartrending stories. A very special thanks to Charbonnet Creative for their wonderful work in creating this gift to us.
