Dear TGF Friends,

Here is some exciting news from The Gretta Foundation (TGF)!

TGF sponsors its first nursing scholarships in Malawi. This small African country is suffering a huge health crisis with one of the world’s highest HIV prevalence rates and an abysmal nurse to patient ratio of 1:55. Without an adequate healthcare workforce, diseases like HIV continue to rage on leaving behind a demographic landscape of orphaned and elderly.

As of this August, five new nursing scholars are receiving full scholarship assistance to include tuition, room and board, clinical and school supplies, uniforms and a small living allowance. These scholars recently began studies at Kamuzu College of Nursing in Malawi, Africa. This program is a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program.

Read the words of a new nursing scholar, Jennifer, as told during the induction ceremony at her new school:

As Florence Nightingale pledged
To the service of humanity
We too pledge to work hard in academic issues

This is the day to remember
Which is more than a wedding day
Indeed your help will ever and ever
Act as an engagement ring

We are going to help others
Who are needy
And be committed to the nursing profession”

We are certain that these 5 scholars are the first of many young aspiring nurses who will leave a life of extreme poverty and enter into a profession dedicated to care and cure. We are proud of Jennifer and her fellow students and we wish them luck in their studies.

Our next big news is the launch of our website. See the creative work of our dedicated board member, Laura Windisch, who has worked countless hours to make this vibrant site a reality. Thank you Laura!

To make Jennifer’s dream come true, many of you have generously contributed to our organization and for that we are profoundly grateful. Without you, we wouldn’t be where we are today, and for that, I offer my sincerest gratitude. In order to further our work and sponsor more nursing scholarships, we continue to focus to grantseeking efforts and on building a strong network of supporters.

We invite all who are inspired by Jennifer and others like her to make a donation to TGF. Every dollar goes very far in countries like Malawi. Please continue to share the work of TGF with friends and persons you know at corporations, nonprofits, foundations, faith-based groups, and public organizations that may be interested in learning more and possibly supporting us to fulfill our mission.

If you wish to contact me, I would love to hear from you. Don’t forget to visit our new website and remember that all donations are 100% tax deductible. If you are interested in making a contribution, our website accepts online credit card donations or you can send a check to:

The Gretta Foundation 101 California Street, Suite 2450 San Francisco, CA 94111.

Thank you very much for your help and for becoming part of The Gretta Foundation family.

With best wishes and my warmest regards,

Meg
